Welcome

Welcome to the Aspiration Facilitation wiki! This is a work in progress, containing all our facilitation documents. We invite you to have a look around, leave a comment or three, and check back soon for more content! We're currently working on a companion "overview" paper that describes the Aspiration event philosophy and methodology. If you would like to receive this document when it is available, please send email to facilitation@aspirationtech.org, and we will make sure to keep you informed!

ALERT: Due to ongoing spam problems, we have had to disable anonymous editing and self-service account creation. We ABSOLUTELY still welcome contributions to this wiki; please contact facilitation@aspirationtech.org to request an account. We apologize for the hassle!

This wiki describes details, considerations, and logistics for organizing and facilitating “Aspiration Style” events. The Aspiration approach to event design and facilitation is strongly rooted in the folk and Creative Commons traditions; we've learned and borrowed liberally from those who have inspired and taught us (see Acknowledgements), and we encourage anyone visiting this site to make use of this material as you see fit, while being mindful to give back whatever additions, corrections, and modifications you see fit to share. And don't be shy about giving us Feedback.

This site is provided as an input or starting point for visioning and hosting events that convene individuals focused on technology-oriented themes relevant to social change organizations (non-profit organizations/NPOs, non-governmental organizations/NGOs and a range of community and educational organizations).

Where strong or opinionated language is used, it represents emphasis on those details we feel have most informed the success of our events and related gatherings to date; your mileage may vary.

Agenda

Participants

Participants details the participant guidelines.

Facilitation

Collaboration

Logistics

Logistics details the little things that make a big difference.

Acknowledgments

The foregoing facilitation and agenda ideas have been collected and developed over years of working with various organizations who convene technology gatherings for the non-profit community. Particular thanks are extended to:

  • The Ruckus Society (Oakland, California US, http://www.ruckus.org), whose Action Camp model, facilitation techniques and agenda structure have inspired many of the ideas in this document, and where we learned “Spectrograms” and “Strong Wind Blows”;
  • The Tactical Technology Collective (Amsterdam, The Netherlands, http://www.tacticaltech.org), whose Source Camps have served as excellent fountains of insight and experience in the facilitation of productive sessions and events, and whose wisdom in convening diverse international gatherings is unparalleled;
  • Blue Oxen Associates (Menlo Park, California, US, http://www.blueoxen.org) and Eugene Eric Kim, for guidance and mentoring in the use of wikis and other collaborative tools for both live events and virtual communities;
  • Mark Surman and IDRC's Telecentre.org program (Ottawa, Ontario Canada, http://www.telecentre.org) for serving both as a primary reviewer and catalyst of these documents as well as an early and frequent contributor to the development of the Aspiration model.

Please see documentation on customizing the interface and the User's Guide for usage and configuration help.
